Whether you are an established merchant with real-world operations or you are a first time entrepreneur looking to carve out your niche in the digital sales market, there are a few things that everyone must consider when creating their online presence on eBay. Starting your eBay seller presence requires significant planning and forethought, and is considerably more complex than clicking a few boxes on the eBay registration form. While it is true that you can (and likely will) learn a lot as you go, a trial-and-error approach can still be considerably costly in the first few weeks or months as you find your way. Here are a few tips and things to consider that will get your eBay online operation up and running smoothly and reaping revenue more quickly.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

This is a little less important for established business that know the costs and timetables for their chain of supply, but it serves even the seasoned merchant well to check through eBay and see what’s hot, what’s not, and whether your products will be moving out the door or gathering dust on the warehouse floor.

 SHOP ON EBAY YOURSELF

One of the best ways to get started making money on eBay is to do a little shopping on eBay first, so you can get a sense of what your potential customers experience when they shop. Get a feel for the search words that are most likely to be used to find your products with an eye toward making the seller end of the experience as easy as possible. From here, also, check out your future competition and make notes on how they present their products, organize their seller profile, what kinds of pictures they use and what details they include in their product descriptions. Then, take a look at customer feedback, see what your competition is doing right, what they are doing wrong, and brainstorm for ways that you can deliver a better experience to your customer. Remember, an online eBay business lives and dies by customer feedback.

 CREATE AN ONLINE BUSINESS PLAN

Before starting any online eBay business, do as much prep work as you can before you click “go” to minimize stumbles and hiccups down the road. Even if you are an established brick-and-mortar business, you need to know a few things about how you will operate online. You need to know how you will process payments, how you will ship to international addresses and how long your delivery times will be, how you will process returns from a global customer base, what sort of guarantees you are willing to offer to online customers, and any other miscellaneous details that are involved with your specific merchandise.

 MANAGING YOUR EBAY OPERATION

You will need to set up a specific email address exclusively for your eBay seller’s account, to ensure timely delivery of inquires, sales and feedback, so nothing gets lost or mixed up with personal email or email dedicated for other parts of your business. Even with an established business, it is a good idea to treat your eBay presence less like an extension and more like a “franchise” operation, with some autonomy.
